Very rare and strange indeed. The Depression which is smashing Oman with heavy rains is expected to move inland and get stronger and stronger. Never seen a Depression intensifying into a possible Cyclone over land in Oman. Lets see if it will be a named cyclone or not. Must be one of the rarest of the rarest if it gets named as cyclone over land. 981 mb inland and it moves into Yemen too as a Cyclone. ECMWF shows gusts of 143 km/hr and historic rains of over 500 mm accumulation in Oman over next 3 to 4 days is huge for Oman. Yemen too is going to get huge rains. The arabian belt kills even a super cyclone with its dry air in few hours. Here constant moisture supply from cross equatorial flow is seen. Could not see any other reason for it to sustain over land. Shear is less too. .... When oceanographer Serge Andréfouet first saw a satellite image of the Great Bahama Bank, he knew the colors and contours were special. He passed the unique image to a colleague, who submitted it to NASA's Earth Observatory (EO) for an Image of the Day in 2002 (top image). Nearly eighteen years later, the image is still much appreciated. In fact, it knocked off more recent satellite imagery to win EO's Tournament Earth 2020. "There are many nice seagrass and sand patterns worldwide, but none like this anywhere on Earth," said Andréfouet, who is now studying reefs at the Institute for Marine Research & Observation in Indonesia. "I am not surprised it is still a favorite, especially for people who see it for the first time." Denman Glacier Losing Some of Its Footing Using a combination of satellite sensors, scientists recently found that Denman Glacier has been retreating both above and below the water line. That one glacier in East Antarctica holds as much ice as half of West Antarctica, so scientists are concerned about its stability. From 1996 to 2018, the grounding line along the western flank of Denman Glacier retreated 5.4 kilometers (3.4 miles), according to a new study by scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The grounding line is the point at which a glacier last touches the seafloor before it begins to float. Behind the grounding line, the ice is attached to the bedrock; beyond it, glacial ice floats on the ocean as an ice tongue or shelf. The retreat of the grounding line at Denman means more of the glacier's underside is now in contact with water that could warm and melt it from below. If the grounding line continues to retreat,

Flooding in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan Flood waters continued to inundate villages and farmland one week after water breached the wall of a reservoir in Uzbekistan. The western wall of a dam around the Sardoba Reservoir broke on May 1, 2020, following a week of heavy rain in the region. Images acquired on May 8, 2020, with the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 show where that water ultimately collected in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. For comparison, the left image above shows the same area on April 22, before the dam failure. Construction of the reservoir, located in Uzbekistan's Sirdaryo region, was completed in 2017. It was designed to hold more than 920 million cubic meters of water for irrigation of the region's agriculture. The first detailed view above shows the spot of the dam failure, as well as the partially empty reservoir, on May 8. Mapping and monitoring of forest resources is a main activity for the departement. A New Lake—Water Not Lava—On Kilauea Between 2010 and 2018, a large lava lake bubbled and spattered within Kilauea's summit caldera. Then in May 2018, as part of a broader eruption that poured lava from fissures to the east, the lake swiftly drained and part of the caldera floor collapsed. This left a hole nearly as deep as One World Trade Center. But that was not all Pele had in store. For about a year, the much-deeper and wider Halema'uma'u crater was relatively quiet. But in July 2019, helicopter pilots began to notice water pooling into a pond in the lowest part of the crater. Water levels have risen steadily ever since. Today, the lake—now with a rusty brown sheen on its surface due to chemical reactions taking place in the water—has an area larger than five football fields combined and a maximum depth of roughly 30 meters (100 feet).
