The Disappearance of Ecuador's Tallest Waterfall Surrounded by lush vegetation and rare butterflies, the San Rafael Waterfall was one of the most captivating landscapes in Ecuador. With water dropping 150 meters (490 feet), the river and falls cut through a thick patch of cloud forest at the intersection of the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Basin. As the country's tallest waterfall, it attracted tens of thousands of visitors per year. But now, the cascade has disappeared. It stopped flowing on February 2, 2020. The images above show the falls and the surrounding river basin while water still flowed on August 4, 2014 (left) and after it stopped on March 15, 2020 (right). These images were acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8. The image below shows a photograph of the falls on November 28, 2012. Diagnostic Testing Strategies for COVID-19 There are 3 main type of diagnostic tests for COVID-19  1. Tests to detect the virus 2. Tests to detect antibodies to the virus 3. Imaging modalities Tests for Viral detection ------------------------------- The most fool-proof method is sequencing of the viral genome. This is how the virus was identified as a novel and unique entity by the Chinese in Wuhan. Once the sequence was made public, tests to amplify and detect the unique portions of the virus could be designed. These tests called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) or more specifically Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) since it is an RNA virus that needs to be converted to DNA by the enzyme Reverse transcriptase. Rapid amplification PCR based cartridge platforms, tried and tested extensively for tuberculosis is now available for various virus diseases including SARS-CoV2. Ice Age Flood at Red Rock Pass About 18,000 years ago, at the peak of the last Ice Age, a single flood from Utah's Lake Bonneville occurred as the lake filled to maximum.  Floodwater began to escape from the enclosed basin here at a low point for the lake at Red Rock Pass.  At first, the lake overflowed slowly as it eroded into loose sediment of an alluvial fan complex shed off the surrounding mountains.   Once started, however, erosional acceleration of the lake waters rapidly cut a channel through the alluvial dam.  The ensuing flood lasted for a couple weeks until floodwaters cut a 120m deep channel across the pass.  Then the flood shut down upon encountering the resistant bedrock below.   Altogether half the volume (~10,000 km3) of Lake Bonneville, flowing at up to one million cubic m/sec, escaped through the pass.  This image looks south into the Bonneville basin where the spillover channel is narrowest and the incised margins of 120m-tall alluvial fan are clearly visible at t

Slowly Flooding History One of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world, Hasankeyf, has been home to more than 20 cultures over the past 12,000 years. Assyrians carved caves into the surrounding limestone cliffs. Romans built a fortress to monitor crop and livestock transportation. Travelers on the Silk Road often stopped in the area to trade during the Middle Ages. Remnants of past cultures have been preserved for thousands of years in Hasankeyf, which was absorbed by the Ottoman Empire in the 1500s and has remained part of Turkey ever since. But those artifacts—thousands of human-made caves and hundreds of well-preserved medieval monuments—may soon be underwater. A new dam and reservoir threatens to drown the city. Hints of Spring in the Atlantic Meteorological spring has sprung in the Northern Hemisphere, and that means the increasing hours of sunlight are slowly waking up primary producers in the sea. Like plants on the land, phytoplankton are floating, plant-like organisms that need sunlight and nutrients to thrive. Springtime brings both. The image above was composed from data collected on February 23, 2020, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite. It captures a portion of the North Atlantic Ocean from the Delmarva Peninsula to Nova Scotia. Aqua MODIS observes Earth in 36 different spectral bands. Norman Kuring of NASA's Ocean Biology group makes full use of that spectrum to make the blooms more visible. The detailed swirls in the chlorophyll-rich water are real; Kuring simply separates and enhances certain spectral bands to tease out the details. The notification for Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) 2020, a consortium to conduct entrance examination for Admission to various programs in Central Universities, has been released.
